NFT system (Nutrient Film Technique)
Most systems are dynamic, with forced water circulation. This is the case with systems using the NFT (Nutrient Film Technique), where plants are grown in dedicated channels through which a nutrient solution flows, made of water and nutrients dissolved in balanced proportions according to the needs of each plant species.
This technique emerged in England in 1965. The name Nutrient Film Technique suggests that the stream of nutrient solution passing the plant roots must be thick enough to give the plant everything it needs, but not so high that the roots are submerged, which would starve them of oxygen.
How does the NFT system work?
The system has a reservoir where the nutrient solution is stored. From the reservoir, the solution is pumped to the top of the growing bench, flows through the channels and is collected at the bottom, returning to the tank — it is a closed system.
A timer switches the pump on intermittently, for example 15 min on and 15 min off during daylight hours. As there is no substrate around the roots, the solution circulates and returns to the reservoir quickly. This means a small reservoir can supply a large number of plants. The system is very easy to look after: disinfecting the reservoir and pipes, and fully replacing the solution. The big drawback is that you cannot stay away from the greenhouse for long. Any failure of the electrical system or pump can compromise or even destroy the crop, especially during the hottest part of the day. Without substrate, the roots dry out easily.
